Ceramic House Lantern Workshop

Set in the enchanting surroundings of Elkstone Studio in their charming new ‘The Elk’ Tipi beautifully dressed in hundreds of twinkling fairy lights. This workshop will guide you through the art of slab building using templates to handcraft beautiful house tealight lanterns. Our tranquil and inspiring location provides the perfect backdrop for an enriching and relaxing journey into the world of clay crafting.

The workshop begins with a warm welcome and an introduction to the craft. You'll explore various designs and example pieces, sparking your creativity and helping you envision your own unique piece. Familiarize yourself with the tools and materials as you embark on your creative endeavour.

Under friendly guidance, you'll learn the fundamentals of slab building, a versatile hand-building technique. Using carefully designed templates, you'll cut and assemble the walls and roofs of your house lantern. This process allows for personal touches, letting you create doors, windows, and intricate details that make each lantern one-of-a-kind. As your lanterns take shape, you'll smooth out rough edges and refine your pieces, preparing them for the glazing process.

The final part of the workshop focuses on adding any last touches to your house lanterns and learning a little about the glazing process. Your creations will be glazed in a beautiful speckled white finish. The finished lanterns, each a testament to your creativity, will make a charming addition to your home décor or a thoughtful handmade gift.

This workshop is suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced potters. Lanterns will take around 3-4 weeks to dry and be bisque and glaze fired, your final piece can be collected from Elkstone Studios or posted at an additional cost to you for convenience. You will have the time and guidance to build a lantern and can choose from three different size template designs. This three-hour workshop is charged at £60 per person and includes the use of all the materials and equipment, firing and glazing.
